Ex-common-law husband accused of burning family alive in Orange Walk

Cabinet expresses outrage over deaths in Orange Walk domestic violence attack

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating what appears to be a case of domestic violence that ended in tragedy early Monday morning in San Felipe Village, Orange Walk, where a mother and her young son were burned to death after their home was deliberately set on fire.

Around 3:00 a.m., villagers saw the Majana family home engulfed in flames. Inside were 35-year-old Angelita Majana, her children 6-year-old Tishan Godoy and Shadia Majana, along with Angelita’s common-law husband Miguel Novelo.

According to Novelo, he was asleep in another room when he woke to a loud noise and saw Angelita’s ex-common-law husband, 34-year-old Francisco Godoy, running from the room engulfed in flames. Moments later, Angelita and her daughter also ran from the burning room, both on fire.

Novelo said he tried to re-enter the house to save young Tishan but the flames were too intense. With help from a neighbor, he and Shadia managed to escape the burning structure.

When firefighters arrived and brought the blaze under control, they discovered the charred remains of Angelita and her son inside the home.

Before being rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital with severe burns, Shadia reportedly told police that her former stepfather, Francisco Godoy, had entered the room while the family was sleeping, poured gasoline on them, and set them on fire. Godoy also suffered burn injuries and remains hospitalized under police guard.

Police investigations continue.
