By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security has confirmed that the explosion that occurred on October 4 in San Jose Nuevo Palmar Village, Orange Walk District, was caused by an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), specifically a MK1 General Purpose Medium Capacity Aircraft Bomb left behind from old military training activities.
Authorities say the bomb, which exploded during an incident on Saturday afternoon, was a training device rather than a live weapon. Unlike its live counterparts, which are filled with TNT, this one contained only a spotting charge, a small component designed to produce a limited explosion during exercises. The blast created a small crater measuring about three feet wide and two inches deep.
Two other similar UXOs were found nearby. These were safely stabilized and removed by the Belize Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, which continues to monitor the area for other potential remnants.
The Ministry cautioned that the surrounding area had once been used as a military training site, and additional UXOs may still be buried or hidden. Residents are strongly advised not to touch, move, or tamper with any metal objects that appear suspicious.
Instead, the public should immediately contact the BDF or the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security for proper disposal. Reports can be sent via email to publicrelations@defence.gov.bz
or made in person at any BDF base across the country.
The Ministry emphasized that the safety of citizens remains its top priority and that trained experts are continuing investigations to ensure the area is secure.
