Nicaraguan Doc will face trial for spiking drink

By Belize Live News Staff: A Nicaraguan doctor accused of secretly spiking his colleague’s drink during a night out in Belize City will face trial tomorrow before Chief Magistrate Deborah Rogers.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dr. Carlos Saborio is charged with administering an obnoxious substance to his friend and fellow medical professional, 30-year-old Venezuelan nurse Javier Brito-Nava.

At Tuesday’s Case Management Conference, both the prosecution and the defense reviewed the evidence to be relied on at trial. Dr. Saborio’s attorney, Richard “Dickie” Bradley, indicated his intent to challenge some of the evidence, particularly how certain information was obtained by police. As a result, when the trial opens today, it will begin with a special hearing to determine the admissibility of disputed evidence.

The prosecution’s first witnesses are expected to include Brito-Nava, along with two police officers. One is said to have provided a DVD of security-camera footage allegedly showing Dr. Saborio pouring an unknown substance into Brito-Nava’s drink while in the restroom. Another witness will be an IT technician.

Dr. Saborio remains out on bail.
