By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation has announced the appointment of Dr. Abel Antonio Carrias as Regional Director of the Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Organization (OSPESCA), the specialized fisheries directorate of the Central American Integration System (SICA). His four-year term runs from 2025 to 2029.
Dr. Carrias was unanimously selected by the Council of Ministers of OSPESCA during an official session on September 24, led by OSPESCA’s Pro Tempore President, Roberto Linares, Panama’s Minister of Agricultural Development.
A Belizean with over 14 years of experience in environmental governance, Dr. Carrias holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture from Auburn University. His career spans government service, academia, consultancy, and regional projects with organizations like FAO, the Caribbean Development Bank, WWF, and The Nature Conservancy.
The Ministry hailed his selection as a major milestone for Belizean leadership in regional marine conservation.
