By Belize Live News Staff: As Hurricane Gabrielle strengthens in the Atlantic, Belize remains outside of its path. The powerful storm, packing sustained winds of 115 mph, was located near 35.8N, 50.2W this morning, about 1,285 miles west of the Azores. Gabrielle continues to move east-northeast at 25 mph and poses no threat to our region.
Closer to the Caribbean, forecasters are monitoring Tropical Wave AL93, located several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles. The wave has become better organized and now has a high chance of development within the next 48 hours. Still, the system is not forecast to affect Belize.
Locally, moist and unstable conditions are bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially over central and southern parts of the country. Residents are advised to prepare for short bursts of heavy rain this morning, with conditions easing this afternoon before showers redevelop tonight in the south.
Temperatures remain hot and humid, with highs of 93°F inland, 88°F on the coast, and 78°F in the hills. Mariners should be aware of choppy seas and waves of 3 to 5 feet, making caution necessary.
Forecasters remind Belizeans that while these systems pose no threat now, this is the peak of the hurricane season, and close monitoring of tropical weather remains essential.
