By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s health sector has received a major boost with the conclusion of the European Union-funded Health Sector Support Programme (HSSP), which invested €8.8 million over seven years to modernize and strengthen health services nationwide.
Working with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and implemented by PAHO, the initiative delivered sustainable improvements across the country. These included hospital retrofits, green infrastructure, solar energy installation, and enhancements to the Central Medical Laboratory.
The programme placed strong emphasis on capacity building, training nurses, doctors, first responders, and community health workers. It also supported the Belize Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025–2034 and pushed forward digital transformation with telehealth and the Clinical Data Exchange Platform.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the HSSP quickly redirected funds to support Belize’s national response, strengthening infection prevention, waste management, and patient referral systems.
PAHO, the EU, and the Ministry of Health and Wellness expressed gratitude to all partners and communities that contributed to the programme’s success, affirming their continued commitment to advancing health and well-being in Belize.
