By Belize Live News Staff: Police are investigating a domestic dispute that escalated into a fatal shooting in Belmopan on Sunday morning, claiming the life of 28-year-old Wilson Hernandez.
Preliminary reports suggest that Hernandez had a heated altercation with his common-law wife, during which she allegedly felt threatened. Investigators say she then handed her licensed firearm to her niece, who fired one fatal shot. Both women remain in police custody.
ACP Hilberto Romero confirmed that the case is being treated as a domestic dispute, but said the final decision will rest with the DPP. He added that police are not yet certain if there is a history of prior domestic incidents.
Hernandez’s family has strongly rejected the narrative of self-defense, alleging instead that he was standing away from his wife when the shooting occurred. Surveillance cameras reportedly captured parts of the incident, which may provide further clarity.
The victim’s mother, Blanca Hernandez, expressed heartbreak, saying she was devastated when doctors confirmed her son had died. The family says they are praying for justice.
