Belmopan, August 29, 2025.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration has issued a statement regarding the case of Belizean national Sebastián Pop, who was recently convicted of femicide in Guatemala.
According to the Ministry, Pop’s legal team in Guatemala had been in contact with Belizean authorities since his removal from the village of Dolores in southern Belize. The Embassy of Belize in Guatemala has worked closely with his lawyer and provided relevant documentation to support his legal process.
Following the conclusion of the case, the Embassy was informed of Pop’s conviction. The Ministry said it has instructed the Embassy to explore further legal recourse available to him under Guatemalan law.
The Ministry noted that it remains “extremely concerned” about the circumstances surrounding Pop’s removal from Belize. It reaffirmed its commitment to continue addressing the matter through established diplomatic channels, guided by international law, and to vigorously pursue his repatriation to Belize.
