By Belize Live News Staff: The Office of the Ombudsman has announced that it has opened an investigation into the August 12, 2025, incident at the Belize Central Prison involving inmate Mr. Nyere Parchue.
According to the release, the investigation will examine whether fairness, proportionality, and established administrative protocols were upheld during the response to an attempted escape. This includes reviewing the use of force, the training and policies that guided the response, and the medical care provided afterward.
The Ombudsman’s Office stressed that the investigation will be conducted impartially and independently. “Our role is to ensure accountability and continuous improvement in the administration of public services. We will follow the facts and the law, and we welcome the cooperation of all parties,” the release stated.
Formal requests for information have been sent to the Kolbe Foundation, which manages the Belize Central Prison, as well as the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Belize Police Department. The Ombudsman added that it will work to avoid prejudicing any ongoing criminal inquiries and will not comment further while the review is underway.
