GOB achieves 25% ocean protection target under Blue Bonds agreement

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has officially reached Milestone 4 of the Belize Blue Bonds Program, a critical step in safeguarding the country’s marine resources and advancing global leadership in ocean conservation. By meeting this requirement, the government has successfully increased total ocean protection to 25.05% of its waters, surpassing the 25% benchmark outlined in the Conservation Funding Agreement.

The newly established protection zones cover 1,669.64 square kilometers of marine space. Specific areas include Lighthouse Reef General Use I and II, as well as expansions in Glover’s Reef and Bacalar Chico. These zones were selected through a collaborative, science-driven process that included widespread public consultations and the involvement of national institutions such as CZMAI and the Belize Fisheries Department.

The significance of these zones extends beyond conservation alone. By protecting key ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves, the zones enhance fisheries productivity, provide natural defenses against climate change, and ensure food security and livelihoods for coastal communities. The designations also strengthen Belize’s reputation as a leader in sustainable marine management.

Belize has now protected a total of 8,360.1 square kilometers of its ocean territory, advancing the country closer to its long-term vision of a Sustainable Ocean Plan. Government officials stress that these efforts demonstrate not only a dedication to international conservation goals but also to the prosperity of Belizeans who rely on the ocean for survival and economic growth.
