Belize Coast Guard acts swiftly to save turtle in heavy sargassum

By Belize Live News Staff: A routine patrol by the Belize Coast Guard turned into a marine life rescue mission after officers discovered a sea turtle trapped in a thick buildup of sargassum along the shoreline.

The incident occurred during the ongoing turtle nesting season, a crucial period for the survival of endangered marine turtle populations. Officers spotted the struggling turtle entangled in the dense mat of seaweed, which had washed ashore in significant quantities. Without intervention, the turtle would likely have been unable to free itself and return to the sea.

Coast Guard personnel waded into the sargassum-covered beach to reach the animal, carefully maneuvering it back to open water. Once released, the turtle swam away, signaling a successful rescue.

Officials note that while sargassum is a natural occurrence, the recent heavy influx has been impacting Belize’s marine ecosystems, posing challenges not only to tourism but also to wildlife. They are reminding the public that this is nesting season and that turtles require clear access to and from the beach to lay eggs and return to the ocean.

The Belize Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation and encourages anyone encountering marine life in distress to report it to the relevant authorities for immediate response.
