By Belize Live News Staff: An inmate at the Central Prison in Hattieville is in critical condition after being shot in the head and neck while attempting to escape on Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. during recreation time, when prisoner Nyrere Parchue was spotted in an out-of-bounds area approaching a guard tower. Despite repeated verbal warnings, Parchue entered the moat, prompting officers to fire warning shots.
According to prison officials, Parchue then climbed a fence, and an officer fired a shot that struck him in the neck and head. He was stabilized by the prison medical team and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Prison CEO Virgilio Murillo explained that guards were aiming for his feet, but the gun’s recoil may have caused the bullet to hit higher.
Parchue, who began serving a sentence in July for possession of a controlled drug and damage to property, has a history of violence and survived a previous gunshot to the head in 2018.
