By Belize Live News Staff: A new era for Belize’s currency begins today as the Central Bank of Belize introduces the updated 2025 banknote series into circulation. The refreshed notes feature enhanced security elements, new portrait designs, and modern themes that reflect the country’s heritage and commitment to safeguarding its currency.
Although visually upgraded, the exchange rate remains stable at BZ$2 to US$1. The Central Bank emphasized that the changes are about modernization and security, not valuation. “We want every citizen to feel confident using the new banknotes,” said Governor Kareem Michael.
The banknotes will be available immediately at all domestic banks. However, not all ATMs will dispense the new notes right away, as machines are still being configured. Over time, more ATMs across the country will begin issuing the redesigned currency.
Existing notes will remain legal tender, but the Central Bank is encouraging the public to deposit old bills to help phase them out gradually.
Since the January design reveal, the Central Bank has engaged the public and stakeholders through outreach and education to ensure a smooth rollout. The theme for the new currency is clear: New Look, Same Value.
