Belize City babysitter at center of child death investigation

By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize City babysitter is now facing criminal charges after a child died under her care.

Police have arrested and charged 56-year-old Jennifer Fitzgibbon for “Abandonment of child” and “Manslaughter by Negligence.” The charges follow a report made on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, which triggered an immediate investigation.

Fitzgibbon, known in her neighborhood as a caregiver, was taken into custody. Upon being formally arrested, Fitzgibbon was cautioned but opted to remain silent. She used her phone call to contact her son.

Authorities have not released information on how the child died or the specific circumstances that led to the charges. However, the arrest has raised public concern over the lack of regulation and oversight in informal childcare settings.

Fitzgibbon remains in police custody as the case develops. Police have stated that further details will be shared as they become available.
