By Belize Live News Staff: A Belizean woman has filed a police report claiming she was swindled out of over $500 by a co-worker who allegedly promised to help her obtain a U.S. visa.
The complainant, a 36-year-old patient care assistant at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, reported that on March 27, 2025, she spoke with a colleague who offered to assist in securing a visa. She transferred $455 via online banking to an account bearing the name of the same co-worker and later paid an additional $50 in cash for an invitation letter for her common-law husband.
The woman was given a supposed visa appointment date for July 28, 2025. However, when she arrived at the U.S. Embassy, she was informed that no appointment had been scheduled under her name. When she contacted the co-worker, she was told the date had changed to August 29. A second call to the Embassy confirmed that no appointment had been made.
Following this, all communication attempts failed. The alleged scammer reportedly blocked her on WhatsApp, and the woman has yet to receive either a visa or a refund.
Police have recorded the complainant’s statement and obtained copies of the financial transactions. The suspect has been identified and is wanted for questioning. Investigations are ongoing.
