By Belize Live News Staff: Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar Panton, is raising the alarm over internal divisions within the United Democratic Party (UDP), warning that recent moves appear aimed at hijacking the party rather than uniting it.
In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday morning, Panton said it is clear the so-called unity efforts are “not to genuinely respect the will of the people, but rather to create a scenario where the party can be hijacked… and placed back in the very hands who have us in this tenuous position.”
She emphasized that any true attempt to unify the party must include all legitimate divisional caretakers and their executives, not just a few constituencies favored by what she called the “Tracy Ticket.”
“The UDP must hold itself to account before it can hold the Government to account,” Panton added, citing growing economic pressures, increased government spending, and fears of executive overreach under the current PUP administration.
Calling for fairness, transparency, and adherence to democratic principles, she reminded party members and the wider public: “Power belongs in the hands of the masses, not the few.”
Panton concluded her message with a personal note, saying she is back home after spending time in Canada with her daughter, Adreanna, which she described as good for her soul.
