By Belize Live News Staff: Speaking during the fifteenth session of the Senate, Leader of Government Business Eamon Courtenay revealed that Belize may soon be summoned to appear before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as part of the long-standing territorial dispute with Guatemala.
“We expect sometime this year we’ll be notified of the date for our ICJ hearings,” Courtenay said. “This will require us to spend significant funds to ensure we are adequately represented.”
Courtenay emphasized the need for robust legal preparation and reminded fellow senators that the government has been preparing to defend Belize’s sovereignty at the highest level of international law.
The news comes at a time when the government is touting a rebounding economy and expanding trade relations across Central America and the Caribbean. But Courtenay made it clear that no matter the economic progress, Belize must remain vigilant and prepared for the legal and financial demands of the ICJ process.
The ICJ case, agreed upon through a national referendum, is a pivotal moment in Belize’s history and sovereignty. Courtenay’s remarks signal that the legal showdown could be closer than expected.
