Pig shortage forces Running W to cancel National Agriculture and Trade Show appearance, sparks food security concerns

By Belize Live News Staff: Running W Brand Meats will not be attending this year’s National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) in Belmopan, and the reason is raising eyebrows across the agricultural sector. The company says there’s a national shortage of live pigs, and it’s pointing fingers at excessive exports as the root cause.

With pork prices rising and local supply tightening, Running W made the call to skip the country’s biggest agri-trade show to focus instead on keeping pork available to Belizean consumers. “This decision was not made lightly,” the company said in a statement. “We believe that prioritizing a reliable supply for our consumers is the most responsible choice at this time.”

While the news is disappointing for regular NATS visitors who look forward to the company’s booth, BBQs, and meat product showcases, Running W says its focus right now is on supporting the local food chain and working closely with Belizean farmers to stabilize the market.

The announcement comes at a time when questions are being raised about the sustainability of exporting large volumes of livestock without adequate regulation. With pork playing a major role in Belizean cuisine and celebrations, the shortage is being seen by many as more than just a temporary hiccup—it’s a warning.

As the conversation around food security continues, Running W’s bold move may spark a national rethink on how Belize balances export revenue with local supply. And while they may be missing from the showgrounds this year, they’ve made it clear that their focus is on protecting Belizean plates.
