Belize advances clean communities initiative through SICA AZUL Project

By Belize Live News Staff: The Department of the Environment (DOE), under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, hosted its initial stakeholder consultation this week under the SICA AZUL project, bringing together public and private stakeholders to address waste management and public sanitation.

The consultation focused on reducing waste from public transportation and improving garbage disposal infrastructure at bus terminals. The Ministry of Infrastructure revealed it spends $2 million annually on roadside cleanup—resources that could fund scholarships or housing instead.

Funded by the Government of Taiwan and implemented regionally through SICA, CCAD, and OSPESCA, the initiative reflects Belize’s growing commitment to sustainability and inter-agency collaboration. The DOE called on Belizeans to practice civic pride and play an active role in keeping the nation clean and healthy.
