Police seize firearm, detain man following gunshots on Vernon Street

By Belize Live News Staff: Chaos erupted shortly after midnight on May 4 when gunfire rang out on Vernon Street, prompting an immediate police response and leading to the detention of a 40-year-old security supervisor.

Officers working special duty near Five Brother Bar heard the shots and rushed to the scene. There, they were directed to a residence on Vernon Street, where they discovered a man believed to be the shooter hiding in a yard.

The suspect, identified as Akeem Tench, was taken into custody. A search of the property led to the discovery of a Glock 17 pistol on the back steps and eight expended 9mm shells near the entrance gate.

The firearm had no rounds remaining in the magazine. The Scenes of Crime Unit documented and processed the scene as police continue their investigation into the public firearm discharge.

While no injuries were reported, authorities are working to determine if the shots were fired as a warning or part of a broader altercation. Charges are expected as investigations continue.
