UDP slams PUP for budget delay, salary hikes amid rising cost of living

By Belize Live News Staff: As Belizeans brace for economic uncertainty, several UDP parliamentarians and senators took turns highlighting what they see as the ruling PUP’s failure to address urgent national priorities—from inflation to national security and environmental protection.

Lee Mark Chang warned that a looming global trade war could worsen Belize’s already rising cost of living. He urged the government to diversify trade partnerships, support small businesses, and improve customs efficiency to reduce operational costs for local producers.

Godwin Haylock turned the spotlight on national security, criticizing the government’s silence following the hijacking of a domestic flight last week. He stressed that with tourism contributing 40% of the economy, the government must assure the safety of air travel.

Senator Sheena Pitts made a strong appeal on behalf of teachers, who she says are overworked, underpaid, and forced to bear costs for materials and transportation. She noted the glaring disparity between their plight and the swift post-election pay hikes for top government officials.

Senator Gabriel Zetina questioned the Cayo Rosario development, calling it a threat to marine conservation and a betrayal of the government’s own “30 by 30” protected areas pledge. He criticized the lack of transparency and the risk posed to the livelihood of local fishing guides.

Closing the press conference, Senator Patrick Faber challenged the Prime Minister to reveal the content of his recent call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, especially in light of Belize losing a USD$125 million MCC grant for education and climate programs. “That money was for our children’s future,” Faber said. “Belizeans deserve to know what was said on their behalf.”

Regarding internal party dynamics, Tracy Panton confirmed that the UDP Party Council will meet in mid-May to finalize the date for a national leadership convention, which will take place within 35 to 90 days thereafter.
