Martinez died on Tuesday in Mississippi at the age of 59. Born in Belize, he migrated to the U.S. at just two years old but remained a source of national pride throughout his life.
Martinez played 268 games with the Baltimore Orioles between 1991 and 1993, becoming a fan favorite during his short but impactful career. He made headlines not just for his heritage but also for his performance—he was the first Orioles player to record a hit in each of his first six Major League games.
Chito’s success opened doors and inspired a generation of Belizeans who dreamed of making it in international sports. His achievements are often remembered as a cultural milestone, representing Belizean potential on the world stage.
