Belize loses $125M MCC grant as U.S. foreign aid shifts priorities

By Belize Live News Staff: Hopes for sweeping reforms in Belize’s energy and education sectors were dashed this week as the United States Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) officially shut down operations, terminating a $125 million grant agreement with the Government of Belize.

The MCC, widely regarded as one of the U.S. government’s most transparent foreign aid institutions, had partnered with over 20 low-income countries since 2004, providing billions in grants for sustainable development. Belize had secured its grant in a deal finalized in September 2024, following a year-long negotiation and validation of governance standards under the Briceno administration.

But with the U.S. shifting away from foreign development aid under the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency—led by billionaire Elon Musk—the MCC was scrapped before any major projects could begin. The closure is part of a broader cost-cutting overhaul that includes retirement and resignation options for over 300 MCC employees and a global pullback from active grant agreements.

Belize’s planned projects, particularly in renewable energy infrastructure and school modernization, are now indefinitely stalled. The Government of Belize has yet to release an official statement, but insiders suggest contingency plans are being explored to salvage parts of the original initiative through regional or multilateral funding.
