By Belize Live News Staff: Firefighters are still working to fully extinguish a massive fire that broke out at the San Ignacio/Benque Viejo Transfer Station on Monday morning.
According to the Belize National Fire Service (NFS), the fire started around 10:28 a.m. on April 21 as a bush fire near Mile 63 on the George Price Highway. Upon arrival, the San Ignacio firefighting team discovered that the flames had spread to the nearby dumpsite, posing a serious risk to infrastructure and nearby property.
Backup was quickly requested from the Benque Viejo Fire Station as the fire intensified due to strong, persistent winds. Firefighters used heavy equipment to remove garbage surrounding the main building to help contain the spread. Despite their efforts, the flames grew in intensity, and crews have been working tirelessly through the night and into Tuesday to control the situation.
While progress has been made, officials report that isolated pockets of fire remain. The National Fire Service expressed confidence that with additional resources from the Ministry of the Public Service, Governance and Disaster Risk Management, Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, the fire will soon be brought fully under control.
The NFS also extended thanks to private sector contributors, particularly Belize Roadway Construction and Mr. Michael Waight of Snooty Fox, for their vital support during the emergency.
As the dry season continues, the National Fire Service is urging the public to avoid lighting fires, particularly early in the season, as such fires can quickly spiral out of control and threaten lives and property.
