By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has released an official statement following the hijacking incident aboard Tropic Air flight 9N711 on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The Cessna 208EX Grand Caravan aircraft, which was carrying 15 passengers and one pilot, departed Ranchito Airport in Corozal at approximately 8:00 AM en route to San Pedro.
According to the release, the flight took a dramatic turn when a passenger physically assaulted the pilot in an attempt to take control of the aircraft. The plane remained airborne for nearly 1 hour and 40 minutes before safely landing at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville.
The pilot and two passengers sustained injuries during the ordeal and are currently receiving medical attention. Fortunately, all are expected to make a full recovery. The suspect, who attempted to seize the aircraft, was fatally shot after the landing.
Government officials commended the pilot for his professionalism and quick thinking under extreme pressure, crediting him with protecting the lives of everyone onboard. The bravery and cooperation of the passengers were also recognized.
While the motive behind the incident is still under investigation, the Government emphasized that Belize’s domestic airspace is generally safe, with over 120,000 flights conducted safely each year. Authorities, including the Department of Civil Aviation and the U.S. Embassy, are actively investigating the case.
As a precautionary measure, enhanced security protocols will now be implemented at all domestic airports across Belize. These measures, which were already under consideration prior to the incident, aim to improve screening and safety without causing major disruptions to travelers.
Officials stressed that there is no current indication of a broader threat to public safety but assured the public that Belize remains committed to maintaining the highest aviation security standards in alignment with global best practices.
The Government of Belize has pledged full transparency throughout the ongoing investigation and reaffirmed that the safety of both Belizean and international travelers remains its top priority.
