By Belize Live News Staff: A severely injured dog found in the Santa Cruz area of Cayo District has reignited public outrage over animal cruelty in Belize. The Cayo Animal Welfare Society (CAWS) confirmed this morning that the dog appears to have been chopped and is suffering from extreme pain.
Photos shared on social media show the animal lying helplessly on the ground with visible injuries to its head. This heartbreaking image comes just days after the public outcry over a viral video that showed three teens chopping a horse—an incident that has led to formal charges and widespread condemnation.
Now, Belizeans are asking: how many more animals must suffer before real change happens?
“This isn’t just about one case. This is about a culture that turns a blind eye to cruelty,” said one animal rights advocate. “We can’t afford to normalize this behavior.”
CAWS is urgently requesting assistance for the injured dog and encouraging anyone with information about the attacker to come forward.
Animal lovers across the country are once again calling on lawmakers to update and enforce legislation that punishes perpetrators of cruelty—not just with fines, but with real jail time. Belize may be small, but the message from its citizens is growing louder: protect our animals, or risk losing our humanity.
