By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has signaled its continued commitment to advancing labour rights and economic cooperation in the Caribbean following its participation in a high-level meeting held in Guyana this week.
The event, hosted by the Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the ILO and CARICOM, brought together regional ministers and labour leaders to address pressing issues such as climate change, governance reform, and labour market transformation.
Leading Belize’s delegation was Labour Minister Florencio Marin Jr., accompanied by CEO Valentino Shal and Labour Commissioner Rissela Dominguez-Patt. The team actively contributed to policy dialogue aimed at improving job security, modernizing workforce strategies, and preparing for disruptions linked to climate and economic shifts.
The discussions concluded with the Thirty-Fourth Special Meeting of COHSOD, where ILO Director General Gilbert Houngbo emphasized the importance of a “Just Transition” — ensuring that no worker is left behind in the move toward greener, more sustainable economies.
Belize’s participation also helped pave the way for a unified Caribbean position ahead of the International Labour Conference in June, where the region will advocate together on behalf of Caribbean labour priorities.
