By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has submitted a formal proposal to the Public Utilities Commission requesting an increase in the average electricity rate, moving from $0.40 to at least $0.43 per kilowatt-hour. If approved, the new rate would take effect on January 1, 2026, and remain in place through June 30, 2028.
According to BEL, the proposed adjustment is necessary to meet rising electricity demand, cover inflation-related expenses, and recover past energy supply costs that exceeded revenues. The company also highlights the need to invest in system upgrades, battery storage, and modern grid infrastructure as part of its effort to ensure long-term stability.
The proposal also includes the full implementation of the PUC-approved Demand Charge Rate, which features demand charges and time-of-use pricing. BEL says this structure will help establish fairer pricing mechanisms for both traditional customers and those who generate their own power, such as solar users.
BEL noted that electricity demand is growing rapidly, forcing the company to rely more heavily on costlier energy sources. To stay ahead of future needs, BEL says it must make significant investments in renewable energy integration and reliability improvements across its network.
The company has submitted detailed data and supporting documents to the PUC and now awaits a formal response. Public consultations are expected as part of the PUC’s review process.
