By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans across the country are calling for urgent reforms to animal cruelty laws after a viral video showing three teenagers chopping a defenseless horse shocked the nation. The case has reopened old wounds, with many now pointing to a history of animal abuse cases that have ended without consequences.
One voice leading the online call for action is Brent Toombs, who shared a scathing post highlighting previous acts of cruelty — from the beating death of a monkey by schoolchildren to a dog named “Bruno” being left to die at the jaws of a crocodile.
“Lots of laughing-face emojis but never any punishment,” Toombs wrote. “This is what we can expect when there are never any real consequences for cruelty to animals.”
His comments have since sparked renewed discussion online about Belize’s failure to consistently prosecute animal cruelty, despite public outrage and video evidence.
In the latest case, the injured horse, now named “Onny,” is being treated by BAHA veterinarians for infected chop wounds. While three teens are currently detained, animal advocates are concerned they’ll face little more than a fine or be released without serious charges — as has happened before.
Calls are growing louder for comprehensive reform, including stricter penalties, dedicated animal welfare enforcement units, and mandatory prosecution of all cases involving abuse or neglect.
