By Belize Live News Staff: Belize must prepare for higher prices on everything from food to fuel as new U.S. tariffs send shockwaves through global trade systems. That’s the message from Tracy Panton, who is urging a comprehensive, united response to the economic uncertainty now looming over the country.
Panton’s comments follow a statement from CARICOM Chair Mia Mottley, who noted that the new tariffs on global shipping could mean major increases in prices across the Caribbean.
“This is something that requires all hands on deck,” said Panton. “It requires the government, the opposition, and civil society to work together on a plan that protects Belizeans—especially those who are most marginalized and vulnerable.”
She highlighted the need for Belize’s leaders to “put their best minds at the table” and prioritize national interest above politics.
Panton’s call comes at a time when the global trade landscape is rapidly shifting and countries around the world are bracing for economic repercussions. Belize, as a small and import-reliant nation, may feel the effects more acutely than most.
