Belize suspends import permits for vegetables amid local supply increase

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize government has suspended all import permits for a range of vegetables, citing sufficient local supply and a need to protect local farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) informed the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) of the decision, which affects lettuce, onions (purple, white, and yellow), potatoes, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and celery.

Authorities warn that anyone caught importing these vegetables illegally will face prosecution under the BAHA Act, Chapter 211 of the laws of Belize, with penalties including heavy fines, imprisonment, or both.

Government officials are urging the public to support local farmers and purchase homegrown produce to strengthen Belize’s food security and agricultural sector.

The suspension remains in effect until further notice, and authorities will monitor the market to ensure local demand continues to be met.
