Spitgate: Alex Balona’s ‘Fly Excuse’ leaves Belizeans in stitches

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizean politics is no stranger to controversy, but few expected a fly to take center stage.

PUP Cayo Central candidate Alex Balona has found himself in the middle of an unusual scandal after a viral video showed him appearing to spit in the direction of UDP campaigners. However, during an interview on Channel 5, Balona insisted it was all a misunderstanding—blaming the incident on a fly that had suddenly entered his mouth.

“It was instinct. Anyone would react the same way,” Balona explained. “There was no ill will. It was just one of those moments where nature took over.”

His explanation has since taken flight on social media, with Belizeans flooding the internet with memes and jokes. Some have even suggested that the “spitting fly” should be made into a campaign mascot. Others, however, are skeptical, with one Facebook user writing, “That fly must be getting paid to cause distractions.”

Whether Balona’s defense holds up remains to be seen, but for now, Belizeans are enjoying a rare comedic break in the political scene.
