Automatic election of PUP candidates sparks debate on democracy in Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: The automatic election of two People’s United Party (PUP) candidates—Henry Charles Usher (Fort George) and Anthony Mahler (Pickstock)—has sparked public outcry, with citizens questioning the fairness and legality of the process.

In a formal letter addressed to the Elections & Boundaries Commission, Wellington C. Ramos, a concerned Belizean citizen, called for an explanation regarding the legal basis for declaring candidates elected by acclamation in the absence of opposition. Ramos expressed surprise that such an occurrence had taken place, noting that most Belizeans he spoke to had never heard of a similar situation in the country’s political history.

The controversy arose after United Democratic Party (UDP) candidates Dean Samuels and Melvin Hewlett failed to submit nominations, leaving Usher and Mahler as the only contenders. Without a contest, both PUP candidates were declared winners on February 24, 2025, bypassing the need for a public vote.

“This is unprecedented,” Ramos wrote. “If this has happened before, many Belizeans, including myself, are unaware of it. We need clarity on what part of our Constitution and electoral laws allow for such a declaration.”

The situation has led to growing concerns about voter disenfranchisement and the state of democracy in Belize. Some political analysts argue that an election without competition undermines the democratic process and raises questions about the strength of the opposition. Others see it as a reflection of internal divisions within the UDP, which may have contributed to the party’s failure to field candidates in these key divisions.

As the country moves closer to the general elections on March 12, 2025, many Belizeans will be watching closely for an official response from the Elections & Boundaries Commission. For now, questions remain about whether this situation is an anomaly or a sign of deeper issues within Belize’s electoral system.
