By Belize Live News Staff: People’s United Party (PUP) candidate Henry Charles Usher has been declared the winner of the Fort George constituency after running unopposed in the upcoming general elections.
Usher’s victory comes after United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Melvin Hewlett did not file his nomination papers, leaving no challengers for the seat. With no candidates from Tracy Panton’s Alliance for Democracy (AFD) or independent contenders, Usher automatically retained his position as area representative, marking a historic moment in Belizean politics.
Speaking after his victory, Usher expressed his gratitude to the residents of Fort George, describing the win as both humbling and inspiring. “I wake up every single morning with that singular ambition to do my best for the people of Fort George, to represent them to the best of my ability,” he said, thanking his supporters for their continued trust and encouragement.
Usher acknowledged the unusual circumstances of winning uncontested but emphasized that his commitment to the constituency remains unwavering. “It’s not about letting up, it’s about making sure we continue to do our best for Fort George,” he stated, adding that his focus now shifts to delivering on his promises and improving the community.
Returning Officer Annisa Perdomo confirmed that Usher’s victory was declared in accordance with election regulations, which allow for an uncontested candidate to be declared the winner. “This is the first time that I know of that a seat has been uncontested,” Perdomo noted.
With the general elections approaching, Usher pledged to continue working tirelessly for the people of Fort George, reaffirming his commitment to serving the community with dedication and integrity.
