Boris Mannsfeld murder highlights need for real estate oversight, says Natural Resources Minister

By Belize Live News Staff: The murder of real estate mogul Boris Mannsfeld has intensified calls for regulatory reforms within Belize’s real estate sector, with Minister of Natural Resources Cordel Hyde stressing the importance of implementing new legislation.

Hyde disclosed that his ministry has developed comprehensive draft legislation aimed at regulating the real estate industry. “I think it’s a very impressive document that will provide a level of regulation that has been missing for decades,” Hyde stated. The draft is currently undergoing review by the Attorney General’s ministry before proceeding to public consultation and parliamentary approval.

The legislation will mandate that real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and land consultants must obtain licenses, complete specific training courses, and adhere to a code of conduct. Failure to meet these requirements will result in penalties. Hyde believes the legislation will help eliminate unethical practices and enhance industry credibility.

Addressing the ongoing investigation into Mannsfeld’s murder, Hyde expressed his condolences and noted that the police and the FIU are collaborating closely. “It’s really regrettable what has happened. I know because they’ve been in touch with the ministry and the ministry had to cooperate, provide information, and give them the kind of access required to continue the investigation,” he explained.

Hyde emphasized that swift action is needed to bring those responsible to justice, adding, “Like everyone else, we are hoping that an arrest or arrests are made pretty soon.”

As authorities continue their investigation, the ministry remains focused on advancing the legislation, aiming to create a more transparent and accountable real estate sector in Belize.
