Cop charged after shooting mentally ill man during standoff

By Belize Live News Staff: The shooting of 24-year-old Emil Rivers, a mentally ill man, by police constable Sheldon Arzu has sparked public outrage and renewed debates about police use of force in Belize. The incident, captured on video and widely shared online, shows Rivers holding a weapon while surrounded by three officers with guns drawn. Despite the standoff, Arzu fired a shot, hitting Rivers in the abdomen.

Belize’s Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, confirmed that Arzu has been charged with dangerous harm and suspended from duty pending the investigation’s outcome. The case has stirred controversy due to Arzu’s criminal past. In 2005, he was convicted of manslaughter for shooting a man inside a police station and served 13 years in prison. His reinstatement into the police force after completing his sentence is now under intense scrutiny.

Public reactions have been mixed. While some argue that Arzu acted in self-defense, others question whether non-lethal methods could have been used, especially given Rivers’ mental health condition. The incident has also reignited calls for police reform and better training in handling individuals with mental health issues.

Arzu is scheduled to appear in court on criminal charges and will also face an internal police tribunal to determine his future within the force. As the case unfolds, the public awaits answers and accountability from Belize’s law enforcement system.
