By Belize Live New Staff: If the People’s United Party (PUP) wins the March 12, 2025, general elections, Prime Minister John Briceño has confirmed that this will be his final term in office. As Belize holds elections every five years, Briceño has stated that once this term concludes in 2030, he will retire from active politics, paving the way for new leadership within the party.
Briceño acknowledged that several individuals have already shown interest in stepping into his role, but he emphasized that the decision will ultimately be determined by the people of Orange Walk Central and the PUP’s internal selection process. He reassured that when the time comes, he will support the party’s chosen successor to ensure a smooth transition.
While it is uncommon for Belizean political leaders to voluntarily step aside, Briceño is committed to an orderly handover of power at the end of his term. As he prepares for what he says will be his final five years in office, his focus remains on securing another victory for the PUP before making his exit from public life.
