By Belize Live News Staff: After confessing to stealing over a million dollars from the Government of Belize, former Senior Accountant Ivan Ayuso has been sentenced to five years in prison. Justice Nigel Pilgrim handed down four separate five-year sentences, though they will run concurrently, meaning Ayuso will serve a single five-year term beginning September 27, 2024.
The case doesn’t end there. The forfeiture of Ayuso’s Belama property remains unresolved, as his estranged wife, Tanya Savery, has stepped in to challenge ownership. The High Court will now have to determine whether the property should be seized or if Savery has a valid claim.
This sentencing marks a significant case of government fraud, showing that corrupt financial practices carry real consequences. As Ayuso begins his prison term, legal battles over his assets continue, proving that the fallout from financial crimes extends beyond the courtroom.
