By Belize Live News Staff: In a significant step towards strengthening climate resilience, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) has awarded BZ$4.43 million in grants to fund four major projects aimed at wildfire management, flood mitigation, and sustainable livelihoods.
The funding comes through the Building Community Resilience via Transformative Adaptation (EDA) Project, which is backed by the Adaptation Fund’s Enhanced Direct Access mechanism. Over the next five years, the BZ$10 million initiative will provide critical support to vulnerable communities, with an estimated 150,000 direct and 100,000 indirect beneficiaries.
The four projects include wildfire prevention programs in Sarteneja Village and nationwide through the Belize Forest Department, an alternative livelihoods initiative by IICA, BELTRAIDE, and the Ministry of Agriculture, and a flood mitigation project in Belmopan.
PACT, which has been Belize’s Nationally Implementing Entity for the Adaptation Fund since 2011, is spearheading these efforts to ensure climate adaptation financing reaches communities most in need. More projects are expected to be approved in the coming months, further advancing Belize’s leadership in climate action.
