By Belize Live News Staff: A growing controversy over government contracts in Belize has drawn the support of the country’s largest labor body, with the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) joining calls for an urgent audit.
At the center of the matter are allegations that more than one million dollars in contracts for the supply of vegetables were awarded to the brother and sister of Oscar Mira, now the Minister of Home Affairs. The claims stem from leaked SmartStream payment records that came to light earlier this month, which reportedly show the contracts were issued while Mira served as Minister of State in the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security.
NTUCB President Ella Waight has voiced serious concern over the revelations. She maintains that an audit should be carried out without delay to determine whether public funds were handled appropriately during that period.
The allegations remain unproven, and supporters of the audit say it is needed precisely to clarify what took place and whether established procedures were respected.
For the NTUCB, the issue speaks to a broader need for transparency in how public money is spent. The organization’s call adds to mounting pressure for a thorough review of the contracts in question.
