More young women in Belize are turning to substance abuse—Here’s why

By Belize Live News Staff: The fight against substance abuse in Belize is gaining momentum as a groundbreaking study exposes a concerning increase in drug and alcohol misuse, particularly among adolescents and women. Presented at a National Stakeholders Consultation, the study—conducted by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, NDACC, and UNICEF—underscored the urgency of tackling this growing epidemic.

NDACC Director Esner Vellos pointed out that Belize’s younger population, especially those between 15 and 25 years old, has seen a spike in substance use, with young women becoming increasingly affected. In response, NDACC is focusing on more inclusive and gender-sensitive intervention programs, ensuring that young women have equal access to rehabilitation and preventive resources.

Ken Legins of UNICEF emphasized that tackling substance abuse requires a proactive, science-based approach. He praised NDACC’s efforts to engage communities, provide mentoring opportunities, and introduce alternative activities that encourage youth to make healthier choices. “Instead of pointing fingers, we need to work with young people to develop solutions that prevent drug use,” he said.

As stakeholders work towards long-term solutions, Belizeans are urged to play a role in prevention by promoting education, supporting youth programs, and fostering community engagement. The study’s findings serve as a wake-up call, reinforcing the need for sustained efforts to protect the nation’s young population from the dangers of substance abuse.
