By Belize Live News Staff: Minister of Education Francis Fonseca has urged understanding and empathy following reports that many bystanders failed to stop and assist a young child who was running alone and visibly confused. While some have criticized those who didn’t intervene, the minister stated that judgment is not the solution and that people respond differently in urgent situations.
Reports indicate that some individuals did try to help the child but struggled to keep hold of him. Witnesses say the child was agitated, scared, and even resisted assistance, making it difficult for bystanders to effectively intervene.
Fonseca highlighted that while community awareness and responsibility are essential, everyday pressures, distractions, and personal challenges often prevent people from immediately recognizing distress signals. He emphasized that the police are currently taking statements from those who attempted to help, and these accounts will be included in the official investigation.
The minister acknowledged that greater community vigilance is needed, but also stressed that people should not be condemned for failing to act in the moment. Instead, he encouraged efforts to improve public awareness and responsiveness to such situations, ensuring that future cases of children in distress do not go unnoticed.
