Belize submits application to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has formally submitted an application to join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip. This move positions Belize among a growing number of countries seeking to hold Israel accountable for its military actions, even as discussions around a ceasefire continue.

The legal action, initially brought forward by South Africa in December 2023, alleges that Israel has engaged in acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Belize now joins Nicaragua, Colombia, Cuba, Libya, Mexico, Spain, Turkey, and the Palestinian Authority in backing the case against Israel at the world’s highest court.

Israel has strongly denied the genocide allegations, maintaining that its military operations in Gaza are legitimate self-defense measures following the October 7 Hamas attacks. Israeli officials argue that the accusations misrepresent the conflict and fail to acknowledge the role of Hamas in civilian casualties.

The case remains a high-profile and contentious issue in international law, with potential far-reaching implications for Israel’s conduct and global accountability in armed conflicts.

Belize’s application will now be considered by the ICJ judges, who will determine whether the country can officially participate in the legal proceedings. The case is expected to continue unfolding in the coming months, as more nations weigh their positions on the matter.
