By Belize Live News Staff: A tragic house fire in Wagierale, Dangriga, has claimed the life of 69-year-old Sonia Sambula, leaving her family devastated and searching for answers. Sambula, who lived upstairs in a two-story wooden house, was reportedly left behind as her two nephews and daughter, who lived downstairs, escaped the flames.
Her son, Denmark Sambula, who lives in another district, shared his heartbreak over the loss of his mother, accusing his nephews of abandoning her in the burning home. He believes his mother was likely asleep when the fire started and was left with no chance to escape.
“My two nephews were in the house with my mom. They ran out and left my mom to burn. No scratches, no injuries—nothing. They just left her inside to burn up,” he said.
Sambula, who is currently in Dangriga making funeral arrangements, said he has been unable to get answers from family members who were in the house at the time. “They can’t even face me right now. The entire family is standing up talking to each other, but no one can look me in the eye. That is what hurts the most. It’s so sad,” he expressed.
The grieving son described his emotional breakdown upon seeing his mother’s remains at the morgue, comparing the tragic sight to “barbecue chicken without sauce.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities are working to determine how it started. Meanwhile, Sambula is seeking assistance with funeral expenses and has provided contact information for those willing to help.
