By Belize Live News Staff: Tragedy struck on Saturday night when a shooting outside a residence on Central American Boulevard left one man dead and a woman in critical condition.
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 10:00 p.m. near #3333 Central American Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers found 24-year-old fisherman Mark Waight, also known as “Peto,” partially submerged in a drain. Waight was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nearby, 33-year-old Francine Herbert was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where doctors described her condition as critical.
According to initial investigations, an argument broke out among individuals socializing outside the residence before shots rang out. Witnesses reported hearing more than a dozen gunshots during the altercation.
Police recovered several expended shell casings from the scene and are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby cameras for further clues.
Authorities have detained a 22-year-old construction worker for questioning in connection with the deadly shooting. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the violence and whether additional suspects were involved.
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
