Toledo Alcaldes Association holds handover ceremony, elects new executive council

By Belize Live News Staff: The Toledo Alcaldes Association (TAA) conducted a ceremonial transfer of authority and knowledge, “Qa’xtasink K’anjel,” to mark the transition from the outgoing Executive Council to the incoming leaders. The event, held on January 17, a significant day in the Maya Calendar, gathered 73 Alcaldes and Deputy Alcaldes representing 78 villages in Blue Creek, Toledo.

During the ceremony, Mr. Pedro Teul of Santa Teres village was elected President of the TAA Executive Council. The other newly elected members include Mr. Jose Chun (San Marcos), Mr. Roman Sho (Blue Creek), Mr. Rufino Choc (Pueblo Viejo), Mr. Ermelindo Acal (Bladen), Mr. Adandino Ack (Otoxha), and Mr. Luis Teck (San Jose).

The association expressed its gratitude to the outgoing council for its dedication over the past two years. Following the election, the new council convened its first meeting at the Maya Innovation Hub in Laguna village.

In a statement, the TAA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Maya communities and strengthening traditional governance practices. The council emphasized the need for unity to address challenges facing the Maya people and their collective governance institutions.
