By Belize Live News Staff: The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has issued a decision restricting the operations of Starlink Belize, LLC (SBL) to specific circumstances. This follows Starlink’s October 2024 application for a Class Licence to provide fixed broadband and mobile internet services across Belize. While the PUC declined to issue the requested Class Licence, it has granted approval for limited use of Starlink terminals.
Under the PUC’s decision, Starlink equipment may only be imported and operated in areas classified as unserved or underserved by existing internet providers, on vessels and aircraft in compliance with regulatory standards, or during emergency situations when other providers cannot deliver connectivity.
Users of Starlink equipment already operating in Belize are required to register their devices with the PUC within 60 days via the PUC Spectrum Online Center. New applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must comply with the commission’s importation and operational guidelines.
The PUC emphasized its commitment to fostering technological advancements while ensuring a fair regulatory environment that protects Belize’s existing telecommunications providers and promotes equitable access to internet services. For more details, visit the PUC’s website at www.puc.bz.
