By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Defence Force (BDF) is reeling from a tragic incident on Sunday night, January 19, 2025, when one of its soldiers, Private Clive Baizar, was shot and killed by a fellow patrol member at the Crique Sarco observation post in the Toledo District.
The Belize Police Department issued a report on Monday detailing the events leading up to the fatal shooting. According to the report, officers responded to a 911 call at around 9:30 p.m. regarding gunfire at the BDF outpost. Upon arrival, police were directed by Sergeant Evan Reynolds, the patrol commander, to a beige cement building where they discovered Baizar’s lifeless body on the veranda. He was found face down in a pool of blood, wearing a green army T-shirt, black shorts, and a single black slipper.
Investigators believe that an argument broke out among patrol members around 8:30 p.m. while some were using their phones on the veranda. During the altercation, Private Alfredo Robinson allegedly drew his military-issued .223 rifle and fired several shots at Baizar, striking him multiple times.
Scenes of Crime personnel recovered eight .223 caliber shell casings, one live round of ammunition, and a black Samsung cell phone believed to belong to the victim. Further examination revealed that Baizar suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head, which exited above his right eye, as well as gunshot wounds to his left shoulder, right shoulder, and right cheek.
Baizar’s body was transported to Punta Gorda Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m. on Monday, January 20.
The suspect, Private Alfredo Robinson, is currently under investigation for murder. The Military Investigation Unit is conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Updates on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
