By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Defense has confirmed a fatal shooting incident at the Belize Defence Force (BDF) Crique Sarco Patrol Base on Sunday, January 19, 2025, which left one soldier dead and another injured. The tragic event has shocked the nation and prompted an ongoing investigation by the Belize Police Department.
According to the ministry’s statement, the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when an altercation among BDF patrol members escalated into violence. One soldier sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another patrol member was injured with two gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition, receiving treatment at Punta Gorda Hospital. Both injuries were inflicted by a fellow BDF soldier, the ministry confirmed.
The First Infantry Battalion has taken swift action to secure the patrol base and ensure that its operations continue without disruption. The Ministry of Defense reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Belize’s national sovereignty and the integrity of the Belize Defence Force.
In its statement, the ministry extended condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and expressed support for both families affected by the tragedy. Welfare officers have been dispatched to provide comfort and assistance to the grieving families.
“The Belize Defence Force honors the life and memory of the fallen soldier,” the statement read. “We remain steadfast in our dedication to service and the values of discipline, respect, and duty.”
