Is that a cockroach or a topping? Belmopan chow mein go viral for all the wrong reasons

By Belize Live News Staff: A viral post from a dissatisfied customer has set social media on fire, with photos of a chow mein dish allegedly containing an unexpected “protein boost” in the form of a cockroach. The dish, bought from a vendor at the Belmopan Market, has left residents disgusted and calling for immediate action.

The now-infamous Facebook post was shared by Manny Gio, who minced no words in describing his experience. Alongside images of the noodle dish, Manny wrote: “This is unacceptable, and they should be shut down. And I nuh want yer nobody di talk bout how di owners are so nice and one a deh help unu cross di street back inna 2018. Dis da rass.”

The photos show a plate of chow mein complete with vegetables, noodles, and what appears to be a cockroach resting among the ingredients. The post has since garnered hundreds of likes, shares, and comments, with most expressing outrage and revulsion.

“Belize, we’re known for our unique cuisine, but this is taking it way too far,” joked one commenter. Another quipped, “Extra protein at no extra charge!” Others took a more serious tone, demanding that health authorities step in and investigate the food vendor.

The vendor, described as an “Asian place near the JP’s office” at the Belmopan Market, has yet to be officially identified. However, the calls for accountability are growing louder. Many commenters are urging authorities to enforce stricter hygiene standards and conduct thorough inspections at the market.

Food safety concerns are not new to Belize, but this incident has added a dose of horror to the ongoing debate about cleanliness and regulation. For some, the incident has already changed their dining habits. “This is why I cook my own food,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “Never eating at the market again after this.”

As of now, the Belmopan City Council and relevant health authorities have yet to issue an official response, leaving many to wonder what actions, if any, will be taken to address the incident.
